EXTRACTING AND STAINING ANIMAL AND PLANT CELLS

Ms Hall's Biology students conducted a lab where they extracted animal cells from their cheeks and examined plant cells using a single layer of an onion.

Students had to follow all safety protocols when working with the staining agent and glass beakers and microscope slides.

Students were excited to see their cells under the microscope lens.  They had to identify the nucleus in their cheek cells.

In the plant cells, the cell walls were easily visible and many students said they looked like a brick wall.

HANDHELD MICROSCOPES IN BIOLOGY

Ms Hall's Biology students at Stein spent a couple of days exploring the world of the very small with handheld microscopes.

Students looked at a selection of rocks including metamorphic, intrusive igneous, and extrusive igneousThey collected leaves and moss and other natural items from the outdoors.  Some students took pictures of their pencil lead on paper and the colored pencil debris in the bottom of their pencil boxes.  A few ants were collected and studied.

It was a super interesting and fascinating couple of days spent exploring the world of the very small.
